If my dated playbook can handle it on it's own screen and a connected HDTV simultaneously, I'd be extremely surprised if the Nexus can't.

It can do MKV files? MKVs are much more intensive than normal HD video.

Yes, the default blackberry player is pretty darn good actually. On android you'll likely have to use VLC as I don't think the stock media player does MKV. My [android] phone can handle HD MKVs too, and it's much lower spec than the Nexus 7. I really wouldn't worry about the Nexus being able to handle it.

Sweet, my 1st gen ipad can't handle it so I was wanting something to watch anime on during long flights.

Really? Have you tried VLC on iOS? I think it was put back in the app store recently.

Yeah but it can't handle the HD.

Huh, I'm surprised. Anyway, the nexus should do nicely.

The only file I had that fit was a BD fan sub mkb of Evangelion 2.22, 1080p. Streamed from my fileserver over the WiFi network surprisingly fine. Using VLC, unrooted device.

I have a Nexus 4 and it can play MKV with VLC on android.
It has an older processor than the Nexus 7 so it should be fine.
Just watch out for the battery 'cause it doesn't last long playing MKV.

Played the first two files on Nexus 7 2013 from this site:

The first played fine on both stock and mx player.
The second didn't play on the stock video player, played choppily on mx player.

Not necessarily true.
MKV is just a video container that holds audio track (usually aac, dts, flac, or mp3), video track (usually h264), subtitles, and possibly chapters. It's only intensive if the video and audio must be transcoded (on the fly, non destructive, conversion into a compatible encoding format, and playback). If you have the proper codecs, playback of MKVs is not very processor intensive.
I use MX Player + ARM7 Neon codec on my Kindle Fire HD and it handles it easy peasy. I highly recommend MX Player. The Nexus 7 will handle it just fine.

Also, a problem with a lot of anime is that it is 10bit video. MX Player is the only player that can handle 10bit as far as I know.

Has anyone else purchased this device yet? I've been having nothing but problems with the WiFi on my device. I have it connected to a new Apple AirPort Extreme in my home.
